Project

Client
VE-GE Bant
Sector
Adhesive tape

Process

Recovered solvent
Toluene, Hexane
Method
Activated-carbon adsorption and thermal regeneration
Standard scope
Design, manufacturing, site installation, commissioning and operator training[C-01]The company’s turnkey scope; the project-specific scope has not been documented separately.

Commissioning year, air flow, capacity and measured results are not published without the client’s approval, which is why they do not appear on this page.

Process flow

Typical recovery flow for water-immiscible solvents

  1. Collection and pre-treatmentfilter, cooling
  2. Adsorptionactivated-carbon beds
  3. Regenerationthermal desorption
  4. Condensationcondenser
  5. Decantersolvent–water separation
  6. Storage and returnnitrogen-blanketed tank
Because Toluene and hexane does not mix with water, the condensed solvent separates from water by itself in the decanter. Where several solvents are recovered together, distillation is added to separate the components. The diagram shows the general flow of the method; it is not the layout, equipment list or capacity of this plant.

Solvent data

Solvent properties that shape the design

Toluene
Water solubility 0.07% (practically immiscible); explosive limits 1.1 – 7.1% by volume; flash point 4 °C[D-01]
n-Hexane
Water solubility 0.002% (practically immiscible); explosive limits 1.1 – 7.5% by volume; flash point −22 °C[D-03]

Values are for room conditions. A low lower explosive limit makes concentration measurement in the dryer essential: L.E.L. control unit.
